The Disciple

The Disciple

As times and technology have changed, our whole approach to getting things done has changed. While in many cases that has produced higher levels of productivity, performance and efficiency, it has taken away something at the core of who we as believers are admonished to be. Instead of being directed, challenged and taught by a person who has a genuine interest in our well being, we enter college or a trade school. There we are programmed with knowledge we must at some point magically transform into real life, so we can make a living. For those with creative or entrepreneurial abilities that becomes another of life’s fun challenges. For those in need of structure and direction, it can be an exasperating process and source of frustration. Unfortunately, Christians have adopted this same approach to teaching or spreading the Good News. A lot of people “not getting it,” especially the fundamental concepts a Christian needs to survive. Christ said in Matthew 28:19 to mathēteuō or disciple individuals, not large groups. Specialized training requires a more intimate relationship.

Christ applies key concepts in daily application during the three years He spent with the disciples. You’ll notice Paul rarely spent a day or two, anywhere. He stayed for long periods of time to insure his devotees had it right before he left. That is why their disciples were grounded and spread the Good News, despite persecution. Check out this summary of Christ’s principles in Matthew 10:24 – 42.

  1. Disciples give up their thoughts and become submissive to their mentor’s teaching.
  2. Disciples integrate what the teachings into their lives, making them like the teacher.
  3. Disciples aren’t intimidated by the world or anyone in it, for ultimately God is in control.
  4. Disciples will not compromise because they see the power of simply speaking the truth.
  5. Disciples will both verbally and with their lifestyle illustrate commitment to their beliefs.
  6. Disciples expect and anticipate adversity from others; even from those they love the most.
  7. Disciples are willing and committed to denying their self interests in the event their desires clash with God’s plan’s for their lives.
  8. Disciples understand they help determine the destiny of people they come in contact with.
  9. When believers share, give or send others, some will also believe.
  10. Believer’s eternal rewards far outweigh whatever sacrifice is made in this world.

Kids, I am not suggesting that our society’s educational system is worthless or of no value. It prepares you to live and compete with equal footing in today’s world. What I am saying is that your eternal education is not going to be acquired by just going to church. You simply will not mature into the concepts I just referred to. Identify a friend and/or mentor who can help you go deep, not just wide. Your mom and dad do not have all the answers and you want to be ready to face whatever you need to face when the time comes. Choose wisely.

Love Dad
